To get a quick assessment of proper screw design, the Thread Failure Calculator can be used.  It's a simple and effective tool to determine what level of force would be needed to pull out the screw based on the screw design, thread engagement and material shear strength.  The tool assumes the screw is metal based, while the boss is plastic based.
