Nylon 612: Fueling Growth in the Transportation Market
Nylon-based engineering compounds are used in a variety of applications in the Automotive and Heavy Truck markets. In fact, these markets combined are the single largest market consumer of nylon compounds. These compounds may be found in interior, exterior, underhood, powertrain, and chassis applications. The powertrain fuel system that delivers gasoline, diesel, or biodiesel to the engine is one such area. Extruded fuel delivery pipes and tubes, and the connectors that join them, are made of specialized polymer compounds that can withstand the aggressive hydrocarbon fuels, high temperatures, and line pressures that exist in the engine compartment. Nylon 612 (also known as Polyamide 612 or PA612) is the polycondensation product of 1,6-hexamethylene diamine and 1,12-dodecanedioic acid. In practical terms, the lower amide group concentration compared to Nylon 6 or Nylon 66 gives it a higher level of performance in several areas.
