BASF Receives GREENGUARD® Collaborative for High Performance Schools Certification

Styropor® Expandable Polystrene safe for use in K-12 schools

Florham Park, NJ – September 30, 2008 – BASF today announced that Styropor® Expandable Polystrene (EPS) has been awarded the prestigious GREENGUARD® certification from the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, Inc. (GEI) for its Styropor® Expandable Polystrene products used in K-12 schools. Under the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) certification, initially developed to meet California Department of Health Services Standard Practice, a standard to measure chemical emissions from building products used in the construction of schools, Styropor has met or exceeded these provisions. CHPS is a national non-profit organization that works with school districts and their design teams to improve the quality of education by using products that have met requirements to receive CHPS credits.

Energy efficiency is a major attribute of Styropor. Insulating materials with BASF’s Styropor are at the forefront of eco-efficient construction and offer advantages over other materials in terms of cost-effectiveness, preservation of resources and environmental protection.

“This certification is significant recognition to share with our customers,” said Satish Kantebet, North America Business Executive for EPS at BASF. “BASF’s leadership in the development of sustainable products allows us to provide our customers with architectural materials that meet our rigorous performance standards, while complying with stringent environmental standards.” “BASF has been a recognized manufacturer for many years and we are proud to identify them with another certification, the GREENGUARD CHPS certification,” said Carl E. Smith, Chief Executive Officer of GREENGUARD Environmental Institute. “Their commitment to attain independent third party emissions certification for their Styropor® Expandable Polystyrene product shows their commitment to sustainability and their care for public health.
