This month, Ben Howe of IDES writes about an increasingly important topic, Finding Alternative Resins. Also Steve Gerbig of DSM Engineering Plastics provides a study on Polyamide Moisture Absorption.

A special thanks to those of you who participated in last month's data sheet survey. The results can be found below.

Warmest wishes,

1. Finding Alternative Plastics by Ben Howe, IDES.com

Finding alternative plastics has been a hot topic recently, especially after hurricanes Katrina and Rita dealt heavy blows to the petrochemical industry. The resulting supply chain interruptions and price increases have no doubt triggered numerous searches for alternative resins. Aside from the post-hurricane scrambling, there are other, more common reasons for finding alternative materials that you may encounter from time to time; either your parts need improvement, the material you've been using doesn't exist anymore, or you've been asked to cut costs yet again. Whatever the reason, it's time to start looking for another resin.

2. Polyamide Moisture Absorption by Steve Gerbig

In plastic materials published data, moisture absorption is almost always expressed in terms of percent weight gain.  While this information is important for comparison purposes, it doesn't truly relate to the design engineers’ application and use of these materials.  This study will quantify and compare the relative dimensional changes which occur in parts as they are exposed to a humid environment and move from the dry-as-molded state toward saturation using Polyamide types 6, 66 and 46.

3. Resin Pricing Report (street, spot & futures)

In partnership with The Plastics Exchange and the London Metal Exchange, we're pleased to provide you with:

Also, each month IDES gathers pricing information submitted anonymously from resin buyers and organizes it into a Street Market Pricing Report. (last updated March 7, 2006)

4. Data Sheet Survey Results

Last month we asked you, "What is the single most important item we could include on data sheets in Prospector that would directly benefit you?"

Here's how you responded (look for these enhancements to be added to Prospector):
