In this issue, Tim Cutler of Dyna-Purge provides an overview on purging. The article includes succinct benefits of purging and includes links to a helpful case study and a cost-to-purge calculator.
Also, with resin pricing continuously increasing, while oil supply and production shows signs of decreasing, how can IDES help you buy or sell regrind or scrap plastic? Take our short survey below.

What is Purging?
Let's begin by reviewing the reasons for purging. By definition, purging is to 'undergo or cause evacuation.'
For plastic processors, purging is an essential part of
the cleaning process. Done properly, purging should:
- Effectively displace the resident resin
- Eliminate the resident resin in dead spots or negative
flow areas
- Remove heat sensitive resins, additives and pigments,
which are susceptible to degredation
- Eliminate black specks produced by carbon build-up
When Should You Purge?
This question comes up often and there are three
common reasons for purging:
- Changeover: the changeover between jobs,
since purging will remove previous colors, resins
and carbon build-up that will contaminate future
production
- Shutdown and Startup: are sources of degradation
caused by excessive heat exposure to the resin
- Routine Preventive Maintenance: purging can help
extend the operating life of plastic processing machinery.

2. Case Study - Annual purging costs cut by $41,000
Matrix Tooling Inc. in Wood Dale, Illinois produces custom
molded parts for the medical industry as well as
specializing in 3-D mold design and moldmaking. The
company operates 10 injection molding machines
including a variety of Arburg, Engel, and Toshiba
models.

Purging takes place an average of six times daily
when changing material and color, notably black
ABS/PC to crystal styrene, PEI to styrene, or acetal
to nylon. Whether using in-house resins or various
commercial purging agents, Matrix was experiencing
unfavorable scrap rates and initial rejections due to
material or color contamination from the purging
process. Labor and material costs of purging were
calculated at ...

5. Plastic Processors Directory (is your company listed?)
More than 6,100 design engineers at 900 OEM companies rely on Prospector Pro and The Plastics Web® from IDES as their sources for plastic materials information. Through both tools, they often reference the Plastic Processors Directory to find companies to process parts for their applications.
"During January (2006), we received more than a half a dozen phone calls from
OEMs that were generated from our listing on the IDES Processors Directory."
