Advertising During a Recession

Most companies drastically reduce, or completely cut their promotional budgets in a recession, but research suggests that is the wrong move. A study by the McGraw-Hill Research Laboratory, found that in both the short and long term, B2B companies that maintained or increased their advertising during a downturn averaged higher sales growth during and after the recession compared to those who eliminated or decreased marketing.

Another study by the Harvard Business Review showed that companies should take the opportunity to do more when their competitors are scaling back. The result can be a dramatic shift in market position.
