Dielectric Strength - ASTM D149

Voltage per unit thickness at which a material will conduct electricity. The higher the value, the more electrically insulating a material is.

The test material is placed between two electrodes. Voltage is applied in a specified manner until the material experiences dielectric breakdown, an electrical burn-through (puncture) of the test specimen. Testing is performed using one of three methods as outlined below.

Method Name Description
A Slow Rate-of-Rise Voltage is increased at a uniform rate until dielectric breakdown of material.
B Short-Time Voltage is increased from 50% of the breakdown voltage to the breakdown voltage at a uniform rate until dielectric breakdown of the material.
C Step-by-Step Voltage is increased from 50% of the breakdown voltage in equal increments for a specified time until dielectric breakdown of the material.
