Resistance of a fluid to flow. Viscosity measurements are useful for quality control purposes and as an assessment of processability. Viscosity is also related to the molecular weight of a material.

Testing for ASTMD2393 is conducted using a Brookfield Viscometer type RVF or equivalent. The viscometer measures the torque required to rotate a spindle in the test fluid. The spindle is driven by a motor through a calibrated spring. The viscosity of the test fluid is proportional to the deflection of the spring. Different spindles and rotational speeds are used to test different viscosity ranges.
