Split Tear Strength - ASTM D470

The force per unit thickness required to tear a material. Test specimens are placed in a tensile test machine. The jaws are set to separate at a rate of 20 in/min (500 mm/min). Split tear strength is calculated using:
Split Tear Strength = F / t
where F is the force required to tear the specimen,
and t is the thickness of the specimen.

Split Tear Strength is part of a test method covering crosslinked wire and cable jacketing.
