Regardless of the economic climate, making improvements in both production and process efficiency can be the most effective way to improve your company's profitability. Process and production improvements are accomplished by measuring and managing key performance indicators like Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). While these measurements can be captured manually, the greatest improvements are achieved when a production monitoring system is used to measure and manage this data.
This webinar will cover how a monitoring system can be used to simplify the collection of information while increasing efficiencies.
Questions & Answers
Q: Are there any suppliers of systems that you would recommend?
A: I have worked with several systems in the past. My recommendation is to consider the systems that are developed for the Injection Molding application. While other systems will work, the Injection Molding process is unique in its operation. My recommendation would be to investigate those systems with world-wide presense such as Husky and Mattec.
Q: What is the return on investment and how long (cost of the software vs. savings)?
A: A typical payback is around 10-15 months. A very large installation can take longer to pay back initially due to the large effort to implement. On large systems (25 machines or greater), I highly suggest you start small to implement the core aspect of the system. Then once the initial training and startup occurs, add monitoring to machines at your desired pace. This will result in a faster payback because of the controlled implementation.
Q: Can your software be applied to non-injection molding proesses (example: assembly or post molding)?
A: The software from Husky (Shotscope NX) can be applied to other processes. Assembly, Diecasting, Forging, Extrusion and Blow Molding are some of the other processes that we have succussfully implemented.
Q: What about security of web-based softare?
A: The Shotscope NX system uses the existing security from your IT infrastructure. Shotscope NX uses the existing Domain level security to restrict which users can log into the system. Most users setup a VPN to provide limited login from outside the manufacturing location. This is a very effective way to keep external people out of your system. If you are still uncomfortable, you can simply remove any external access to the Server alltogether. In addition, the security can be used to limit users from specific areas of the application. Giving you the control of each persons' access rights.
Q: Does predictability also include maintenance?
A: Maintenance, or Preventative Maintenance is a key component to making operations more predictable.
Q: Can we connect other equipment besides molding machines such as dies (press room) to NX?
A: Yes, you can connect other equipment to Shotscope NX. It is not limited to Injection Molding.
Q: Can you mention some of the variable costs?
A: Variable Costs are all of the costs that can change when the volume of the production units change. This can include utilities (electric, gas, etc.), material, labor and overhead.
